Improvers Throwing with Matt Waite Courses

from £280.00

Specialist Improvers Pottery Course | Max. 7 Participants | Wiltshire Pottery Studio

Take your throwing further with production potter Matt Waite

If you've mastered the foundations of throwing and are ready to develop your skills further, this specialist six or eight-week course offers the perfect next step.

Learn directly from production potter Matt Waite as you spend dedicated time throwing, refining your technique and exploring new forms in a relaxed, small-group environment. Rather than following a rigid syllabus, each course evolves around the interests of the group, with demonstrations, discussion and individual guidance throughout.

Whether you're looking to improve your confidence, tackle more ambitious forms or simply gain a fresh perspective from another experienced maker, this course offers the time and support to develop your own making.

What You'll Explore

Every course is different, but areas of exploration may include:

  • Throwing with larger amounts of clay

  • Bowls and open forms

  • Bottles and jugs

  • Lidded forms

  • Pulling and attaching handles

  • Spouts and teapots

  • Trimming, finishing and fluting

  • Production techniques

  • Developing more confident, considered making

This course is designed for potters who already have the foundations of throwing in place and are ready to build on them.

  • Trimming your work independently

Whether you've completed Level 2 at Marsh Farm Pottery, learned elsewhere or regularly practise at home or in a studio, you're welcome to join us if you have these core skills.

If you're completely new to throwing, we'd recommend starting with our Level 1 Throwing Course before progressing onto this course.

Why Learn With Matt?

Matt Waite is an experienced production potter whose work is rooted in functional ceramics, thoughtful forms and confident craftsmanship.

His teaching combines demonstrations with practical problem-solving and individual guidance, helping students understand not only how to make a form, but why different techniques, proportions and processes create stronger, more successful pots.

Working alongside Matt provides a valuable opportunity to learn from another maker's experience, develop your own approach and gain fresh inspiration for your pottery.

Throwing, Glazing & Firing

The focus of this course is making on the potter's wheel, allowing every session to be dedicated to throwing, refining techniques and exploring new ideas.

All finished work will be bisque fired.

If you'd like to glaze your pots, you're welcome to book onto one of our Glazing Workshops, where ceramic artist Rachelle Corker introduces stoneware glazes, oxides and decorative techniques.
